Anton is gone...

He touched the hearts of those who got to know him....
He had great admirers around the world through the social media.

Everybody with the interest in Friesians knows him.
And he will live on.

Please accept our deepest condolences for your loss, family Kelnhofer and Team Fenway.

This is how we wish to remember him, Anton 343 Sport Preferent

Nanna Salmi had a great privilege to work with Anton´s tail hair.
This bracelet Scirocco was made with his hair for an auction.

the original collection by nannasalmi since 1990

Anton was born on 18.6.1992.
He reached the high age of 25 and was awarded with the predicates
'Sport' and 'Preferent'.

Those are  great achievements, but we believe his greatest achievement
was just to exist and be what he was.

If you wish to have this beautiful bracelet Scirocco (ribbon 9 mm) made of
your own horse´s tail hair, please, contact us!

Sport Predicate
The Sport Predicate can be awarded to mares, gelding, and stallions that achieve good results in competitive sport. The Sport predicate can only be obtained based on results achieved at shows registered with the " United States Equestrian Federation, United States Dressage Federation, American Driving Society" or "Koninklijke Nederlands Hippische Sportfederatie”/Royal Dutch Equestrian Federation (KNHS). The scores registered with USEF, USDF, ADS, or KNHS determine qualification for the Sport predicate.

Preferent for Stallions
The Preferent predicate can be awarded to stallions that have a lasting, special influence on the breed. For consideration for Preferent the quality of the offspring will be tested for the breeding-goal characteristics. The lasting value of a stallion is evaluated based on the offspring produced that have determining roles in the breeding of Friesian horses such as Preferent mares, stallion dams and (based on offspring) approved sons.

Corbiniani donated tail hair for the bracelet 'Faune

the original collection by Nanna salmi

Cobin and Dark donated hair for Quentin Judge´s cufflinks 'Polo'

The thing is: you don´t have to be a world famous rider. Your horse doesn´t have to be world famous either! You two are very special and a world to each others.

Keep your dearest one next to you all the time and forever - have something beautiful and unique made with the tail hair.

She Did It Again - Tracey Venter and her Black Mare

nannasalmi sponsored
Inspections this year again.

The ring Artema was to be given to the owner of
the champion mare in Great Britain 2015.

Must say it was not a surprise to learn that Tracey Venter
got a new item to her collection of nannasalmi horsehair jewellery...
Her Friesians are all quite amazing!

This year she earned it with this beautiful mare, Doutzen.

Congratulations Tracey and Doutzen!

"Our 2nd premie Ster and Champion Mare on her way to the highest score (79)
achieved in an IBOP in the UK to date", Tracey wrote in Facebook.

"She's the third offspring of her Brandus mother (Stam 1) we have worked with. The first was Wouter who achieved Ster in 2012, the next was Berber who scored 77.5 points in the IBOP and gained Kroon and overall champion in 2014. This mare was very weak through her back when we bought her over from NL and benefited from 2 years running with the herd before I backed her as a 5yo last spring.

She has been a absolute delight to work with and I was delighted my views on her ability under saddle were recognized by the inspectors on Monday. She is well and truly part of the team here and hopefully I'll find some time to compete her for a few years before we choose
a suitable stallion for her", Tracey writes.

Tracey will have the ring Artema woven with Doutzen´s hair.
Look, what she got last year!

The Friesian Stallion Nanning 374

One day there was an order from the US. The customer told that they have this beautiful, Friesian stud, Nanning, and they would like to have a keepsake made with Nanning´s hair.

Mr. Kelnhofer went through the collection but could not find anything to suit him - he wished to have a bracelet that would be masculine enough for a man to wear. No problem: a new bracelet was designed and Mr. Kelnhofer was very happy with it. To come up with the name for this new item was not difficult, it got the name "Nanning".

The plate is 10 x 30 mm, it is 3 mm thick, the ribbon is 9 mm broad. The bracelet is available in silver, gold and white gold and the finishing can be glanzed or matt.

Have your horse´s name engraved on it!

Nanning 374 was born 2.5.1996 and his original name is Nillis van´t Sonnis. He lives in the Fenway Farms in Wisconsin, USA. His height is 1,69 m and as you can see, he is absolutely beautiful.

Anja - the black Friesian beauty

Last summer we received an email from The Friesian Horse Association of Great Britain & Ireland. They had seen nannasalmi -jewelry and asked us to sponsor their Friesian Festival in August.

We gladly did so!
The Friesians are one of the most beautiful horse breeds in the world and Nanna Salmi has had an honor to work with hair of some very famous ones, Nanning 374 and Anton 343, already.

It was quite exciting to wait and see who is going to win the custom made nannasalmi bracelet Mistral... All we knew was that we can count on black tail hair and a great horse!

Anja won Official FHAGBI inspections 2014 when she achieved the highest IBOP score of the day which resulted in her becoming the first Friesian Crown mare in the UK.

Here they are, Tracey Venter with Anja (Ait 410 x Time 398) 16hh Ride & Drive Mare

With Kyra

Text Jilla Lappalainen
Photos Sonja Holma

Kyra Kyrklund had her sold out clinic in Ypäjä Equine College in Finland in the end of March, and the media had a chance to meet her there.

A year ago she got the diagnosis of breast cancer and has been waiting for the 1st of April.
"A year ago my doctor said that this will take a year. On the1st of April it is one year from the diagnosis. The treatments are over and step by step I can continue doing things I had to dropp off a year ago. At the moment I ride two horses per day at home. We have now only 12 horses, my husband (Richard White) and I travel a lot because of the work. We have two trainees from Ypäjä Equine College and two permanent employees, but still it is easier with less horses. Some of the horses are our own, some of them are customers´ horses."

The media was also interested in Max. How is Max doing?
"Max is fine! He´s already 20 years old but still the king of the stables. He works three or four times a week and we do GP level movements. Some things he is doing even better than during those years we competed."

What is the secret of his condition?
"Probably because I finished competing with him early enough, before he got broken. I try to keep Max in a good condition, both physically and mentally. We still have to be a little careful with him - we don´t leave the stable with a long rein - he is still very quick in his actions."

Talking about young horses, which are the main things you pay attention in the future dressage horses?
"If we are talking about the yearlings which I go to see on a pasture, I pay my attention to their balance. I also try to find out if a horse easily changes the gallop - which is good - or if it has to take many short, balancing steps between different gaits. Of course a build of a body is important and the family. In the end I trust the breeders a lot."

What kind of a training program you would recommend with a young horse?
"When working with young horses you have to follow their terms. You work with them 2-3 times a week and then they should rest and spend time in a corral. Working with them has to be many-sided and interesting."

Do your young horses jump?
"Yes, they do. Once a week we had a show jumper who worked with all the young ones and they really enjoyed it. A happy horse has the energy to work and it is coopeartive. If there is no cooperation, there are no results either..."

What do you think about the age classes?
"If the training is correct and the horse horse is on the right level, age classes are good. It´s always important to have goals and targets. But if a young horse is not at it's best, you should not compete with it. That might even give the horse a bad experience. Working should not be too hard or difficult. A young horse should not be confronted with too difficult challenges. You can stretch bounderies but if it does not work, you have to take a few steps back. Someone has said that a lazy trainer is the best for a young horse. Young horses don't necessarely get better when riding them a lot."

Do you think the dressage has changed during the years?
”Within the last twenty years we have got a lot of new information about horses and their behaviour, riding has changed into more horse orientated. Earlier we might have thought that a horse denying to work was stupid or stubborn, now we do e.g. act of bending to make sure a horse is not hurting. The perspective has changed.”

Has this have any influence on the working of the dressage judges?
”Yes, I think so. Nowadays they put more attention in the big picture. Earlier, if you entered infront the judges with a gallop but a horse took one step back after stopping, you got four. Nowadays they observe the same situation with a larger scale: How was a gallop, how well a horse was prepared for a transition etc. Still one judge can give four and another one eight. Judging is changing continiously, sometimes more motion, sometimes relaxedness or stronger collecting is more wanted. Charlotte Dujardin's Valegro for example has changed judgind to a softer direction.”

Then, in the end, what is demanded from a good dressage rider?
”Passion”, says Kyra smiling. ”Passion and persistence. You need to know your own body and there are good tools for it, e.g. pilates. You must work a lot. For some riding is easier, but then there is a danger not to do certain necessary things. And then someone not so talented but hardworking rider gets better results."

"The way to rise the level of the dressage is wanting to ride better.” Kyra K.

Allah Jabek, Saudia, Al-Saad Khaled...

It is always exciting to get an order: what kind of a customer, what kind of a horse... Is there a special story behind the order and - most exciting - what kind of tail hair is in the envelope! But if there is "HRH" in front of the name in the order form, you might get super excited!

The Arabs are well known for their love of horses and the Saudia Arabian Royal Family is famous for their dedication in riding, breeding, promoting and developing the riding culture in
Saudi Arabia. They have a world class show jumping team and many of the riders are also
members of the royal family.

His Royal Highness Prince Abdullah Bin Miteb Abdullah Al-saud is one of the top riders in the team. At the London 2012 Olympic Games, in front of 23,000 spectators, he and his team mates made history: Saudi Equestrian team won it's first ever Team Jumping medal! The fellow riders were Kamal Bahamdan, Ramzy Al Duhami and Abdullah Al Sharbatly.

Big moment for the team in Sunny London 2012.

If you take a good look at HRH´s little finger, you can see the ring Saudia by nannasalmi.

The first one ever was made for him in 2007. The ribbon for HRH's ring was
black and contained hair of six of his favourite horses:
Allah Jabek, Al-Saad Khaled, Poco Loco, Lil Majd, Obelix and
- Saudia.

Nanna Salmi thought that the name "Saudia" would be perfect for this simple and elegant ring. The new design had a name, a beautiful name.

The woven ribbon is 6 mm wide and Saudia suits both men and women very well. The ring
is available in silver, gold and white gold. The ribbon is sheltered and covered on the palm side and that makes the ribbon more durable - you can wear it as your lucky charm when riding!

Kyra Kyrklund, Mrs Horse Professor

Kyra Kyrklund was born in Finland 1951. She started riding in Helsinki Keskustalli when she was 11 years old. Kyra started her competing career in Lahti, Finland in 1967. The borrowed horse was called Dragon and it was the Nordic Championship. Two years later Kyra got a horse of her own, Kasper, and she did show jumping, eventing and dressage and was very succesful in all of them.

During the years Kyra Kyrklund has become the most succesful Finnish dressage rider. She has competed in six Olympics, two more times she was nominated in a team but could not participate in as her horse was injured. She has been coached by Walter Christensen, Herbert Rehbein and her husband Richard White.

As a coach Kyra Kyrklund is also one of the tops in the world. She is internationally well known, liked and succesful dressage trainer, and she travels around the world holding clinics and working with riders and horses. Kyra has worked with Jan Brink, Emma Hindle, Nathalie Zu Sayn-Wittgenstein ja Imke Schellekens-Bartels among the others. 1988 the Finnish Olympic riding team (became 6th) was trained by her. She also coached the Finnish dressage team for the London Olympics 2012.

"Kyra Kyrklund is one of those dressage characters who is not only a Champion rider in her own right but has an uncanny ability to impart her knowledge in a way that every person listening can easily understand and relate to. This teacher has a way with words that makes logical truth simple and understandable."

Not only riders, she has trained more than ten horses to the international GP -level and also competed succesfully at the same time. Matador, Edinburg, Master and Max are names most of us are familiar with.

Her best known horse is probably the carismatic stallion Matador II. Together they won the World Championships silver in 1990 and the first prize in World Cup Finals 1991. Unfortunately the Japanese owners decided to sell Matador and it looked like she was going to be without a horse. Fortunately she found a petite, black, Russian stud Edinburg, bought it and only six months later she was 5th in the Olympic Games with this unexperienced stallion 1992. It was sensational.

The last National Championships Kyra took part in with Max, a Swedish half-breed gelding. Max was born in 1995 and is a descendant of stud Master. They were succesful in Aachen World Championships 2006, 2007 in World Cup Finals Las Vegas, next year in 's-Hertogenbosch and in Peking Olympics 2008. In September 2009 Kyra announced that it is time for Max to retire and to start living happy, carefree, stressless horse life.

Plastron Max is named after this beautiful horse and the first one ever was made of Max's hair for Kyra Kyrklund. Nanna Salmi met Kyra in Hamina Bastion Horse Show 2001 and Kyra asked for a plastron. The plastron was designed and made and since then it has been one of the most popular designs in the collection.
